The Karoo Lamb Geographical Indication (GI), signals a specific quality of lamb and mutton which relates to the Karoo origin of the meat..

The name “Karoo Lamb” is now protected by law and may only be used in accordance with the GI and Designation of Origin regulations. All participants now have to comply with the minimum product specifications published in the “Karoo Lamb / Karoo Lam” registration as a South African Geographical Indication (Notice No. 3992 of 27 October 2023).

The South African Meat Industry Company (SAMIC) as the designated assignee responsible for the enforcement of the Red Meat Regulations is subsequently responsible for the inspections of producers and groups of producers using the registered SA GI Karoo Lamb to establish and ensure compliance with the critical elements of control specified under the Notice No. 3992.

Any farmer, abattoir, packer and retailer can sell Karoo Lamb if they are listed with the assignee or verified members of the Karoo Lamb Consortium. As a member of the consortium you obtain the right to use the name Karoo Lamb and will not have to be responsible for your own application process to the State or your own audit costs

For a small membership fee the Karoo Lamb Consortium will take care of all verification and compliance costs and individuals can now continue to market their products under their own name or label.
