The Karoo Lamb Consortium
The farms Bethlehem, Draaikolk, Springs, Stuurmansfontein and Stuurmansfontein remnant, are situated in the Northern Cape in the Kareeberg mountain range near Carnarvon.
Bethlehem is the main homestead. It has a fairly new house that was buildt in 1977. Draaikolk's house was built in 1927 and Stuurmansfontein has a Corbelled House, which dates back 200 years. It is a national monument. Bethlehem has 2 water wells and Stuurmansfontein has 2 fountains.
Piet is the 3rd generation on the farm.
In the Karoo you have to look after the soil and then the soil wil look after you. This means do not overgraze the land, otherwise you create your own droughts. We farm with 2 000 dorper ewes. Our animals are "free range". Our product is healthy, good quality and safe for human consumption. The animals graze on fantastic grazing plants, such as grewia robusta (karookruisbessie), limeum aethiopicum (koggelmandervoet), nenax microphylla (daggapit), tetragonia calycina (klappiesbrak), to name a few.
In this part of the Karoo one has to live close to nature to be able to survive. We are doing our best to preserve everything for the next generation.
