Boksfontein is located in the heart of the Karoo. Only 11km from the N1 highway Boksfontein is near the main routes but far enough to experience the true silence of the Karoo. Unlike most people's views on the Karoo region, there are a wide variety of plants and grasses that cover the landscape. Other attractions include a swimming hole, Bushman drawings, caves, domesticated farm animals and many wild flowers in spring time.
There is a fountain running into the 90meter pool at the house and produces perfectly clear water for the garden and animals. The fountain has never stopped running and provided for generations of families through times of drought. There is also a waterfall on the farm and a cemetery.
Flip Retief is the 5th generation and the 4th Retief on Boksfontein. He farms with Dorper and Angora goats. Flip is fortunate to live and work in the Karoo, he is only 23 years of age but he has gained much knowledge about the veld and animals. The Karoo is in his blood and it will always stay there. Flip like to fix fences and close ditches by packing stones in it. He puts branches on bare patches of land to avoid erosion. He also work to maintain the farm road and believes that farmers should work together to improve the roads.
Flip's mother Salomié Retief runs a guesthouse with a self-catering Karoo overnight and holiday accommodation on the farm. The four options namely the Huis, Paleis, Pondok and Pastorie are each unique with different facilities. Boksfontein offers a convenient look at the heart of the Karoo.
