The name Pypfontein apparently comes from farmers who passed by the farm and stopped at the fountain for the animals to drink water and then they smoked a pipe.
Hardus is the 1st generation on the farm and is farming for 15 years on Pypfontein. He enjoys farming because he is his own boss. He studied B.Sc Agric Honors at Kovsies, Bloemfontein (UOFS). He believes the Karoo lamb is the best product in the world and nowhere else will you get better. The Karoo lamb is healthy, free of artificial hormones; it has good fat and no chemicals.
The total number of sheep on the farm is always less than the farm's carrying capacity. The camps rest regularly and this improves the grazing system and there is enough food for sheep in dry times.
Pypfontein was the first farm in Murraysburg district that was planned by the Department of Agriculture; it is not so well planned because the people still had little experience and so the camps are very large and not quite as it should be. Hardus is constantly dividing the camps into smaller sections for better grazing.
There is enough water points for the sheep so they don’t have to walk far to drink. The crows on the farm are a helpful method to spot problems. Whitenecked Raven is normally around a fresh carcass, a Pied crow is normally around fresh and also old carcasses.
He scans his flock and increases the lamb percentage; the fertility of the ewes has greatly improved over the last 10 years. TheKaroo lamb is well cared for in its natural environment. Hardus looks after his animals carefully and does his best to deliver the best product on the market.
