The farm is very important to Maria Malan seeing that it is a major source of income. She always wanted to own a farm and her heart is in farming. As a child she always cared for orphaned lambs and her dad taught het how to farm. She’s been farming since 1999. She first farmed goats and pigs but then decided to change to sheep.
Today she provides lamb to the SKA every 14 days.
"The sheep's meat tastes delicious and it's as close to organic as you can get. The Karoo scrub gives a lot of flavor to the meat and many people proofed this. " says Maria.
She believes that rams are a key element in farming with sheep. She selects the rams herself for good production and put a suitable ram with the ewe. She also selects rams and markets them. Her desire is to buy more land and expand the farming business.
Maria loves the farm and the quietness of the field. The farm sounds, birds and nature gives her a wonderful sense of peace.
In 2009 she was the Lady Farmer of the year - a big achievement! At the Carnarvon show her sheep won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes. She also produced champion ewes. She won several prizes at the slaughter lamb competition with SAMIC.
