Since 1841 the van der Merwe family is the owners of Badsfontein and farming with Merino sheep is a proud tradition which was passed on for five generations.
The current owner, Izak Johannes van der Merwe, is the fifth generation on the farm. True to tradition and showing the family’s love for the wool industry, Izak, was also President of the National Wool Growers Association of South Africa for six years.
The name, Badsfontein, comes from the fountain near the old farmhouse. According to history there was an ox wagon route running through the farm, and the travellers use to bathe (“bad”) in the fountain to get relief from the dry dust and heat of the Karoo. Susanna van der Merwe has developed the farm into a guest farm – again providing recuperation for weary travellers or anyone needing a rest from life’s journey.
The Karoo is a very remarkable place with its windmills (“windpompe”), rocky outcrops and semi-desert vegetation. Izak`s farming motto is: you do not farm with sheep, but with Karoo veld and the animal is just the harvest machine that convert the veld into a marketable product- natural Karoo lamb! Badsfontein also offers a host of activities; however, the peace and quiet is what is attractive of this destination. But most important, the traditional, hearty food with naturally spiced Karoo lamb is the reason why guests return.
