Louie van der Merwe farms with 1700 Dorper ewes in the district Vosburg. He has game for hunting on Mierfontein and a hunter’s guest farm. He also organizes hunts and overnight stays. He is the second generation on the farm and started farming in 1986. He is the director of the Karoo Meat Farmers Vosburg and serves on the show committee.
On Mierfontein about 5 km outside of Vosburg on the Sodium road is a widespread dry salt pan where the "Pan-Fun" is held every year in October. It has a quarter mile where people race against each other.
Louie inherited the farm, so the soil has sentimental value for him and he tries to keep it in good condition for him and his descendants. He farms with the veld and not the sheep because if you don’t have veld you cannot keep or farm with sheep or any other animal. He makes his camps smaller and sets up more water points so that the sheep do not have to walk far.
The Karoo lamb is natural and spends his lifetime in a healthy environment. Some good shrubs found here is the Ertjie bos, Koggelmandervoet Karoo and Pers Aar, the Anker Karoo, Gannabos and Silver Karoo. A person can taste and smell that this Karoo shrub is spicy and fragrant and it won’t do any harm to anyone. The sheep are not too thin or too fat, Louie breeds for evenly fat distribution. He breeds his own herd sheep and takes part in the herd show.
